Our country was founded by immigrants. Our country is the melting pot. Different cultures, different views, different races all coming together to work toward making our nation great.
Illegal immigrants are a problem, but the proposed solutions are not going to help. There are families here that do not deserve to be broken apart, we need to make becoming legal easier and we need to make the process of becoming an American citizen easier. Despite the fear that immigrants will "take our jobs" (while somehow at the same time draining our welfare....) more immigrants means more people spending money which leads to more jobs. Our jobs are going away due to corporations exploiting lax labor laws in developing nations and exporting our jobs, they aren't being reduced due to more people being here. It will also increase the tax base, meaning more money for the government to work with.
Rather than spending an abhorrent amount of money "protecting our border" we would increase our revenue by having more citizens paying taxes and more open trade with our neighbors. Plus, since less people would have to sneak across to follow the American Dream, it would become harder to smuggle contraband, weapons and dangerous criminals. Say a criminal wants to sneak across now, it's a lot easier for them to blend into a crowd of illegals than it would be for them to have to cross alone. If people who aren't dangerous criminals can come across legally, then they wouldn't need to sneak across and wouldn't serve as camouflage for those who shouldn't be coming across.
Now, while I am for immigration and the integration of those already here, I have to unfortunately take a seemingly contradictory stance on a different subject. Refugees. I do not discriminate against people, but the culture of those seeking refuge from Syria and elsewhere in the middle east is violent and dangerous and would not have a good impact if allowed to migrate in mass into the US. A look at Sweeden will show why. There are areas in Sweeden now where it is dangerous for non-muslims to go. There is a rape epidemic, women and girls are harassed and called whores in the street. These refugees are coming from a place that is absurdly backwards when it comes to women's rights, personal freedoms etc. and has had a catastrophic effect on the societies that attempt to integrate them in mass. We have enough things to worry about domestically right now without having to add to it thousands upon thousands of people who have no respect for our customs, our culture, or our citizen's individual rights. The culture shock would be catastrophic.
It is important for our country to offer aid to people and countries in need, but that does not obligate us to help them at great cost to ourselves. I am not in support of letting in large numbers of refugees from a culture in opposition to our own.
